I’m always a bit of a sceptic when budget-style brands like Myprotein bring out pre-workouts. Usually, they’re watered down, bulked out and generally not very effective.

Myprotein, however, has developed a reputation for delivering solid products at a decent price.

Earlier this year, I picked up a tub of Myprotein’s budget pre-workout Mypre and put it to the test over a week of early morning workouts.

Active Ingredients

Creatine, Caffeine, Amino Acids, Vitamins, Minerals, Beta Alanine, L-Citrulline Malate, L-Arginine, D Aspartic Acid, and Betaine.

Mypre is formulated with a whopping 22 ingredients that combine to deliver extra energy and to delay fatigue.

The ingredients used are solid and, while they aren’t dosed to blow your head off, will give you a decent pick up.

The 200mg dose of caffeine does the heavy lifting with a slight tingle added by the 1.6g of beta alanine.

The beta alanine dosage is super low even for a budget pre-workout and there were certain workouts when I didn’t get any tingle at all.

I’m happy to ignore the lacklustre beta alanine as the hefty dose of caffeine (five and a half cappuccinos!) is enough to get you moving!

Alongside the beta alanine and caffeine, there’s a bunch of different creatines and a decent dose of BCAAs included in the supplement.

Mypre comes in seven flavours, described by Myprotein as ‘tantalising’. I tried two — Orange and Watermelon — and they were okay. I’ve definitely had better but it was definitely palatable.

MyPre costs £24.99 for a 500g tub, which is £4.99 per 100g.

Compared to TPW’s Genesis (£4.60 per 100g), BULK POWDERS Elevate (£5.18 per 100g) and BSN N.O.-XPLODE (£6.99) it’s towards the cheaper end of the scale, which is probably about right for the buzz it delivers.

Mypre falls squarely into the entry-level pre-workout bracket. There’s nothing wrong with that but don’t pick it up expecting to have your mind.

If you’re used to higher dosed premium products, give it a miss. If, however, you’re just getting into pre-workouts and want something that won’t leave you shivering for days, Mypre is a great choice.
